Staff Correspondent
Gulbarga: Members of the All-India Students' Federation and trainees of the Industrial Training Centre (ITC) staged a protest here on Saturday demanding that they be absorbed into Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs). They also registered their protest against the State Government's insensitive approach to their problems. They started a relay fast and said it would go on till the Government found a permanent solution to the issue. They submitted a memorandum to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi through the Deputy Commissioner's office before dispersing. Every year, the ESCOMs hire nearly 400 ITC trainees as apprentices for a stipend of Rs. 1,000 a month. However, these apprentices were not absorbed into the companies after successful completion of training, the protestors said. The Government is violating a rule stating that at least half the staff recruited in ESCOMs should be from the ITC, the protestors said. The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. had hired 1,300 Industrial Training Institute graduates, but no one from the ITC. They demanded that the ESCOMs fill up backlog vacancies and urged the State Government to employ ITC trainees in various departments. "We tried to meet Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to discuss our problem. But he did not give any concrete assurances," they said. Federation leaders Mallanadgaowda Biradar and others led the strike.
