COIMBATORE: Local Planning Authority (LPA) began demolishing two unauthorised floors of a five-storeyed commercial complex on Cross-Cut Road here on Saturday, sending a clear message that building rule violations would not be tolerated anymore. Official sources said this was the first of the many buildings identified for the demolition of unauthorised structures.

Joint Director of the LPA S.A. Balasubramaniam supervised the demolition that was carried out in association with the Coimbatore Corporation. Engineering and Town Planning officials of the Corporation were also present at the demolition site, where the police were posted in strength to avert any untoward incident or protest.

The Corporation announced on December 22 that it had a list of 573 buildings with various types of violations. Structures endangering the lives of the visitors, those with deviations from approved plans and buildings that were totally unauthorised would be demolished. As per the list, 460 buildings were found to be unsafe, 72 had no fire safety measures and 41 had serious violations of building rules.

Corporation officials said the previous demolition was carried out in 1990. They admitted that the tearing down of the unauthorised floors on Saturday would send a warning against such violations. Mr. Balasubramaniam said permission had been given only for the construction of ground floor and three floors above that. But, the owner had constructed two more floors. Three notices had been served on the building owner asking him to remove the unauthorised structures. As it was not done, the LPA decided to demolish the structures.
