NEW DELHI: N. Srinath, the 2005 World under-12 boys champion, collected his maiden International Master norm after scoring 5.5 points from nine rounds of the Hastings Masters International chess championship in Hastings, on Friday. The talented Chennai-lad faced three Grandmasters and three International Masters among nine titled rivals whose average rating of 2385. Srinath's four victims included fourth seed Azerbaijan's GM Farhad Tahirov, rated 2545. Srinath played way above his rating of 2141 and performed at 2448. As a result, he gained nearly 50 points. Seeded 52, Srinath finished a creditable 24th in the 100-player field. In this premier event, Srinath lost to Russian GM Wacheslav Ikonnikov (2587), beat Swiss Woman FIDE Master Alexandra Wilson (2056), USA's IM Vladimir Prosviriakov (2346) and England's FIDE Master Jack Rudd (2310), lost to England's IM Andrew Greet (2439), drew with Russian GM Arkadi Vul (2365), defeated Azerbaijan's GM Farhad Tahirov (2545) before drawing with Holland's IM Herman Grooten (2387) and England's IM Jones Gawain (2430).
