NEW DELHI: Amid strong protests from Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs, Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia introduced the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2007, during a special session of the Delhi Assembly on Saturday. As soon as Dr. Walia began introducing the Bill, Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukhi got up and charged that the "Bill is an attempt by the Congress to avoid defeat in the MCD elections by postponing them''. Stating that there was a clear plan to delay the elections, other BJP legislators -- former Minister Harsharan Singh Balli, Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan and Sahib Singh Chauhan, to name a few -- accused the Congress of running away from the elections. The Bill, under which the number of wards in the MCD is sought to be increased, would be discussed in detail on the second and last day of the Special Session on Monday.
