DHARWAD: Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi has said the Department of Animal Husbandry will bring into force an insurance scheme for cattle from this month.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, the Minister said the scheme would be implemented on an experimental basis in Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Kolar and Mandya districts.

Initially, only milch cows and buffaloes would be covered under the scheme, and the compensation would be between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000, he said. The Minister said beneficiaries had to pay 50 per cent of the premium.

    Plans

The department had plans to insure 10,200 cattle this year for which the Centre had released Rs. 1.43 crore. The State Government had requested the Centre to extend the scheme to other districts also.

The State Government was implementing the "Suvarna Karnataka Gotali Samrakshana Karyakrama" for protecting native breeds of cattle.

A single project would be implemented in all districts, he said.

He said the department had given sanction to build 150 veterinary hospitals in the State and had released Rs. 10 lakh to each hospital. Based on the recommendations of Dr. Nanjundappa committee, 69 veterinary hospitals had been sanctioned for backward areas and Rs. 8 crore released for the purpose.

The Minister said orders for appointment of 133 veterinary doctors had been issued and shortly 41 more doctors would be appointed.

The Government had given sanction to appoint 300 veterinary inspectors. Still, the department had many vacant posts of veterinary doctors.

It had taken steps to recall veterinary doctors who had been deputed to other departments. The process would be completed by April, he added.
