Classes to showcase Gandhian Studies

Staff Reporter

  • University receives no application for the PG course this year
  • 12 students take up the course in the first year

BANGALORE : The Bangalore University Centre for Gandhian Studies has not received any application for its postgraduate diploma course in Gandhian Studies this year. The centre has received only two applications for its certificate course on the same subject.

To arrest this "very poor response", as admitted by the officials of the centre, the university will hold classes at the Gandhi Peace Foundation. The long distance between the Jnanabharati campus and the city is quoted as one of the reasons for the poor response.

In its first year, the centre had 12 students. But they discontinued after a while. An official said that these students had apparently joined the courses to enjoy the university's hostel facilities.

    Seminar

The centre will organise a seminar on "Globalisation and swadeshi: can they co-exist" on January 31, a workshop on "Human duties and responsibilities" in February, a national conference on "Gandhian legacy in the new millennium" on March 21 and 22, a workshop on "Gandhian solutions to present-day problems", seminars on "What Mahatma Gandhi means to Me", and an international workshop on conceptualising a "Charter of human duties and responsibilities" in collaboration with "Alliance for a responsible, plural and united world," France.

    Handbook

The centre will bring out a handbook on "How to inculcate Gandhian values in the younger generation" in collaboration with the International Academy for Creative Teaching.

It has released its annual calendar for 2007 on the theme "Re-discovering the Mahatma."
