Karnataka Arts College is overall champion

DHARWAD: Karnataka Arts College, Dharwad, won the overall championship in the Karnatak University's 56th inter-collegiate athletic meet, which concluded at the Rani Channamma ground here on Saturday.

JSS College, Dharwad, and Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad, won the team championships in the men and women's categories respectively.

While Shilpa Magalad won the individual championship in the women's category, Sandeep V. Kulkarni, S.C. Shivanur and R. Sharatraj were the individual champions in the men's section.

Important results (winners only):

Men: 4x400m relay: JSS College; Half-marathon: S.C. Shivanur; 400m hurdles: Sushil Sandhu; 100m: Sandeep V. Kulkarni.

Triple jump: Manjunath Naikar; Hammer: B.S. Kumbar.

Women: 4x400m relay: Karnatak Arts College; Half-marathon: S.V. Patil; 400m: Shilpa Magalad; 100m hurdles: S.V. Akshaya; Triple jump: Jyoti Birje; Hammer: V.V. Warkar.

Vinoop shines

M. Vinoop's all-round show (49 and four for 56) in the second innings helped St. Joseph's Boys HS (SJBHS) snatch a two-run victory over Bishop Cottons Boy's School in a Himalaya Cup under-15 tournament semifinal that concluded here on Saturday.

Chasing 162, Bishop Cottons scored 160 for nine in the stipulated 30-over second innings. In another semifinal, Presidency School defeated Frank Anthony Public School (FAPS) by 72 runs. The final between SJBHS and Presidency School will be held here on January 8 and 9.

The scores (semifinals): SJBHS 207 for seven in 55 overs and 167 for eight in 30 overs (M. Vinoop 49) bt Bishop Cotton Boys' School 212 48 overs (S. Dabeet 73, S. Pranshu 53 n.o., Vinoop Manoharan four for 68) and 160 for nine in 30 overs (K. Dheer 71, M. Vinoop four for 56).

Presidency School, RT Nagar 196 in 49.1 overs and 194 in 30 overs (Muneer 76, Aman Raj 46, Karun Nair four for 69) bt FAPS 182 for eight in 55 overs (Abhijith 54) and 136 for eight in 30 overs.

Minal, Sneha to lead

Minal and Sneha Tiwari will lead the Karnataka boys and girls' basketball teams in the National youth championship in Jaipur from January 9 to 15.

The teams: Boys: Minal (captain), Sujan, M.I. Md. Irfan, Santhosh, Venkatesh, V. Girish, Bipin Pande, Suresh, Pavan Chinnakar, Karthik, Dilip Kumar, Rahul Sunny. Coach: A. Anantha; Manager: S. Thyagarajan.

Girls': Sneha Tiwari (captain), Sophia, Lakshmi, Sandhya, Tejeswini, S. Venkatesh, Kavitha Badiger, Deepa Ragunathan, Gloria D'Souza, Sneha Srinivas, Dechamma, Yashica Lakkanna. Coach: Mohan Kumar; Manager: Harani Ravikumar.

Mangalore Metropolis TSD rally

Indian Motor Sport Club is organising the `Connect Mangalore Metropolis TSD Rally' at Mangalore on January 7.

The rally will be held on time-speed-distance format. More than 60 competitors in two and four-wheel category from various parts of the country are expected to participate.

The total distance of the rally is 135 kilometres and it will be flagged off at Mandovi Motors, Hampankatta at 11 a.m. For details, contact Ashwin Naik, Secretary, IMSC, ph: 9448485868.

BSNL hockey from tomorrow

The Karnataka Circle Sports & Cultural Board will organise the 5th all-India BSNL hockey tournament at the KSHA Stadium from January 8 to 13.

The six-day event has attracted 15 teams, including the host. Karnataka has won each of the previous four editions and is hopeful of retaining its supremacy, said T. Kuppuswamy, Chief General Manager, Karnataka Circle at a press conference here this afternoon.

The 15 teams will be divided into four pools and the league winners from each pool will play the semifinal knock-out. Four matches are scheduled for each day.

Meanwhile the Karnataka Circle team was announced: The team: T.J. Bopanna (captain), R. Kwaja Riyazuddin, J. Kothandapani, B.S. Diwakar, B.V. Ashoka, R.B. Vinod, Praful Kujur, O.E. Thimmaiah, Md Nazim Bepari, M.A. Vinod Chengappa, P.V. Kosalram, S. Kabilan, D. Parthiban and G.P. Paulraj. Coach: G. Paulraj. Manager: A Rajeshwaran.
