KSLTA gears up for Bangalore Open

BANGALORE: The preparations for the Sony Ericsson WTA Bangalore Open championship, which begins on February 12, is in full swing at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association here. The work would pick up momentum with the arrival of Australian representatives of Rebound Ace, which would supervise resurfacing of the courts.

P.R. Ramaswamy, Joint Secretary, KSLTA, who spoke to The Hindu, said the courts would sport new shades with purple in the playing area and green in the surrounding areas. "We had the playing area in blue with green surroundings, but we have to change it to suit WTA's new norms," said Mr. Ramaswamy.

He said that a major part of the work would be undertaken after January 15 and would be completed by the first week of February. "Already the electronic scoreboard and floodlights are in place and we have to just do a little bit of painting and polishing of the galley," said Mr. Ramaswamy.

Alterations

Also, alterations are being carried out in the players' lounge and the gymnasium. "By February, it gets warmer here and WTA officials had suggested we put an air-conditioner in place and we would be providing that too," he said.

The stadium has a capacity of 7,000 and KSLTA might add about 300 to 400 seats in temporary stands, when the event reaches the climactic stage.
