BJP demands withdrawal of building construction tax

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has sought withdrawal of the building construction tax being imposed on citizens by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Seeking the Lieutenant-Governor's intervention, the BJP leader accused the MCD of levying a new tax despite announcing that no new taxes would be imposed while presenting its budget in December last.

In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Vardhan criticised the MCD's move to levy the new tax, which requires individuals to pay a certain amount of money at the time of getting their construction plan approved. This tax is in conformity with the building standards prescribed by the Central Public Works Department and if the cost of construction increases then the building owners would have to pay an additional amount before being issued a completion certificate.

Dr. Vardhan also claimed that the house tax for residential properties given out on rent in A to E category colonies has been increased by 50 per cent. "The house tax in E, F and G categories has been increased between 6 to 8 per cent and these categories include all unauthorised and rehabilitation colonies, urban villages and all regularised colonies. Due to the increase in tax rate residents in these areas will have to pay 33 per cent more property tax for properties given out on rent," Dr. Vardhan said, adding that property tax in regular colonies, Government colonies and Government properties had also increased considerably.

The BJP leader also sought a refund of the additional amount paid by some people whose property tax was calculated at commercial rates after the change of land use. He said the MCD had not been able to provide online information on the number of people who pay property tax and had failed to meet the target of recovering revenue amounting to 3,200 crores.
