BERHAMPUR: The ruling alliance, BJD-BJP, succeeded in chalking out tie-up for panchayat polls in Ganjam district, the district having the largest zilla parishad in the State. But in adjoining Gajapati district both parties are at loggerheads over seat sharing and according to BJD leaders the possibilities of an alliance is almost bleak. In the last panchayat polls the BJD and the BJP had not been able to have an alliance in Ganjam district but they had entered into seat sharing in Gajapati district.
Seat-sharing formula
In Ganjam district after a series of meetings since January 3 the district level leaders of both the parties agreed upon the formula for the seat-sharing for the zilla parishad elections on Friday night. Out of the total 69 seats of the Ganjam Zilla Parishad, the BJD would contest in 51 while the rest 18 would be fought by the BJP. In the 2002 panchayat polls BJD had won 36 seats and the BJP had bagged 10. Congress had 16, CPI had won four and independents bagged three seats. In Gajapati district both the parties had initially thought to contest in seven seats each for the of the 14-member zilla parishad. But later the BJD leaders did not want to hand over four zilla parishad seats in Kasinagar and Gosani blocks to the BJP.
