Pulse Polio drive begins today

MANGALORE: The first round of the Pulse Polio programme for the year will be begin in the district on Sunday. Polio drops will be administered to children under the age of five at 921 booths spread across the district, H. Jagannath, district health officer, told presspersons on Saturday.

The immunisation drive will be on till January 10.

The health department was aiming to cover 1,79,449 children in the age group in the district. Of them 1,25,649 were in rural areas, and 53,800 in urban areas.

He said that 741 booths would be set up in rural areas, and 180 in urban areas for the purpose.

Of the 252 booths in Mangalore taluk, 185 will be in rural areas, and 67 in urban areas.

Puttur taluk will have 135 booths in rural areas, and 10 in urban areas. Of the 194 booths in Bantwal taluk, 181 will be in rural areas, and 13 in urban areas.

Sullia and Belthangady will have 75 and 165 booths respectively. Mangalore City Corporation area will have 90 booths.

Special booths

To ensure that no children are missed in the immunisation programme, special booths have been set up at bus stands and railway stations.

Door-to-door visits would also be conducted, Dr. Jagannath said.

Although, the last case of polio in the district was detected in 1999, identification of 624 polio cases in the country in the last year was a cause for concern, he said.

B. Nagaraj Shetty, district in-charge Minister, will inaugurate the immunisation drive at Government Wenlock Hospital here.
