`Government not providing credit to rural sector'

Special Correspondent

It is aslo sidelining Muslims: Poojary

MANGALORE: Rajya Sabha member B. Janardhana Poojary has expressed dismay over the Karnataka Government's failure to provide credit to the rural sector at 4 per cent interest rate.

He told The Hindu here on Saturday that the Government was not carrying out the Union Government's instructions.

Mr. Poojary said the State Apex Bank had been given specific instructions to pass on the benefits of the 4 per cent credit to primary co-operative societies, which functioned as credit dispensation bodies in rural areas. But a series of downstream co-operative organisations added their charges to it, and the final product was available to micro-economic organisations at 12 per cent rate, he said. Mr. Poojary criticised Janata Dal (Secular) for aligning with "communal elements". He said the chances of Dakshina Kannada district getting higher investment were remote. The silence of the Government was "enhancing" the courage of communal forces, he added.

Mr. Poojary alleged that Muslims were being sidelined by the coalition Government. This was weakening the chances of the community becoming an organised economic community, he said. The State Government should try to employ Muslims in Government offices, Mr. Poojary said.
