TRADITIONAL START: Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University R.C. Sobti inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of Manipal Institute of Technology in Manipal on Saturday.
Manipal: Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University R.C. Sobti said on Saturday that the gap between technology in rural and urban areas in the country should be reduced. He was speaking after inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of Manipal Institute of Technology, a unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), here. Prof. Sobti said that science and technology should be used for the betterment of life. India has been technology-oriented since ancient times. Technology in the ancient times went from India to the West. The excavations in Rajasthan and Gujarat proved that Indians had an edge in town planning, he said. The contribution of Sushruta to the field of medicine cannot be overlooked. In field of mathematics and astronomy, Indians have made stellar contributions. But somehow, science and technology was portrayed as a western phenomenon, he added. The foundation for science and technology was laid in the country in the post-Independence period. The recent statement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the amount of money spent on science and technology was most welcome, Prof. Sobti said. P.K.A. Muniswaran welcomed the gathering. Pro-Chancellor of MAHE H.S. Ballal presided over the function. Chief Executive Officer of Manipal Education and Medical Group Ranjan Pai released the golden jubilee souvenir. Director of the institute S.S. Pabla was present.
