CHENNAI: A newborn bison calf is the latest attraction at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP), Vandalur.

The one-day old calf, born on Saturday afternoon, was healthy, staying close to its mother inside the enclosure.

Bison count up

With the birth of the calf, the zoo now houses a total of five bisons — two males, two females and the newborn.

Of the two males, one is an adult and the other is a sub-adult.

Of the two females, one is an adult and the other a sub-adult, said zoo authorities.

The zoo's first bison arrived almost eight years ago. Then, a bison that strayed into a village near Thirukazhukundram was rescued and provided shelter by the zoo authorities.

Later in 2002, a companion was brought from the Mysore zoo under an animal exchange programme.

Sometime later, a calf was born, which has now become a sub-adult.

Another calf was delivered few years back, which is now a sub-adult, said the officials.

The newborn calf was the star attraction at the zoo as it enjoyed the protective care of the mother.

Sex determination due

The sex of the newborn, however, is yet to be determined, the authorities said.
