PACKED LIKE SARDINES: Traffic jam at Ameerpet junction on Saturday afternoon. Photo: G. Krishnaswamy
HYDERABAD: Commuters had a harrowing experience for two hours when a city bus broke down leading to traffic jam at Begumpet, Somajiguda and Ameerpet on Saturday afternoon. The APSRTC bus going from Punjagutta to Ameerpet broke down near Maithrivanam junction around 2 p.m. bringing movement of vehicles to a grinding halt. Vehicles jampacked on either side of the Ameerpet-Punjagutta road threw traffic movement out of gear on all connected roads. The worst hit was Greenlands-Monappa Island-Punjagutta stretch where construction work of fly-overs was on. With the road dug up for erection of pillars, space has shrunk by almost half. Whatever little space available was occupied by the iron poles installed in the middle of road as part of the construction work. By the time traffic police learnt about the bus breakdown and reached the spot, traffic congestion spread to surrounding localities. "We toiled for 15 minutes to shift the bus to a side and restore traffic movement," Punjagutta Traffic ACP Ram Sudhakar said.
