Plea to start work on Vizhinjam port

Special Correspondent

Speakers at meet allege international conspiracy to sabotage project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A mass convention held at Neyyatinkara near here on Saturday urged the Government to start work on the proposed international deepwater container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam by May this year.

The meeting called on the Government to think about alternative proposals for implementation of the project even as it goes ahead with fresh global tenders. The convention was organised by the Vizhinjam Mother port Action Council (V- MAC) in Neyyatinkara taluk as part of a district-level campaign for the project.

V.J.Thankappan, MLA, inaugurated the convention held in front of the Neyyatinkara bus stand. G. Christudas presided over the function.

Speakers at the meeting stressed the need for people across the State to join hands for the project, in the light of the international conspiracy to sabotage the proposal.

They said the situation called for an alternative proposal to develop port facilities with public participation.

The convention also decided to organise meetings in the Parassala, Aryanad, Nemom, Kovalam and Neyyatinkara Assembly constituencies.
