Plight of a traditional art form

Staff Reporter

Kochi: Chakyarkoothu seems to be losing out on popularity in schools arts festivals these days. Only two students participated in the high school section at the Ernakulam district schools arts fete that concluded at Muvattupuzha on Saturday.

Vineeth V. Chakiar, a tenth standard student, of St. Thomas High School, Ayiroor, walked away with the first prize. "I narrated Lord Krishna's experience in the Kaurava Sadas on stage," he said. Son of famous Chakyarkoothu artiste Vasudeva Chakiar, Vineeth started learning the basics of the art from fourth standard. "I also attend professional programmes along with my father," he said. The last day of the festival witnessed a tough competition in patriotic song (upper primary) event. Students of St. Joseph's CGUPS, Thripunitura, bagged the first prize.

The song with opening line `Bharathame... ' won the hearts of the audience. Penned by Unni Kodungalloor, the music of the song was given by Sunil Kaitharam.
