PROBE UNDER WAY: Police personnel in the apartment complex where the crime took place on Sunday. - PHOTO : A. MURALITHARAN
TAMBARAM: A knife-wielding duo targeted an 18-year-old girl when she was alone in her apartment at Chromepet and took away gold jewels and mobile phones. The incident happened on Saturday morning, but the girl's relatives lodged a police complaint only on Sunday, as the robbers warned her of dire consequences if she approached the police. The girl, who requested mediapersons not to disclose her identity, said the youngsters had come to her first floor apartment near MIT Bridge on GST Road at 1.30 p.m. on the pretext of seeking directions for an address. She sent them away as there was no such address in the locality. The second time she opened the door to the calling bell, the youngsters, who seemed like "second year college students," barged into the flat and demanded her jewels. She handed over a gold chain and a couple of rings weighing close to two sovereigns. They also took away a couple of mobile phones before locking her up in the bathroom. But the girl managed to come out, as the door was not bolted properly. Her father is working in a private company in Faridabad, while her mother is a part-time accountant in Chennai. The Chromepet police are investigating if there was a connection between this robbery and the incident that took place at Peerkankaranai a few days ago. In the earlier incident too, the culprits were youngsters and a similar weapon was used and the crime took place between 1.30 and 2.30 p.m.
