Case may be filed against Orissa DGP in Rajasthan

For allegedly shielding his son convicted of raping a tourist

  • `DGP did not cooperate with Rajasthan police team who went to Orissa'
  • The department has already suspended Jaipur Jail Superintendent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government is mulling whether to file a case against Orissa DGP B. B. Mohanty for allegedly shielding his son, who jumped bail over a month ago after being convicted of raping a German tourist in Alwar.

``On my return on Tuesday, I will get the matter reviewed and contemplate whether a case should be initiated against Biti Mohanty's father for manipulating facts while filing the bail bond,'' State Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said over the phone on Sunday from New Delhi where he was attending a BJP meeting.

He alleged that DGP did ``not cooperate'' with a Rajasthan police team who went to Orissa for carrying out searches for the 24-year-old ex-MBA student, convicted in March last year by a fast-track court for raping the German research scholar in Alwar.

The team returned empty-handed late last month.

Mr. Kataria said ``his (Biti's) father probably tried to manipulate the facts to get benefits on medical grounds for his son''.

Rajasthan Director-General of Police (Jails) Omendra Bhardwaj has admitted that the police had made no headway in arresting Biti Mohanty, whose bail bond expired on December 4.

``We have alerted the office of the Superintendent of Police (South) and its subordinate office of station house officer in Vaishalinagar here to arrest him. It is the duty of the police, not of the Jail Department, to locate him with the cooperation of Orissa police,'' Mr. Bharadwaj said.

The department has already suspended Jaipur Jail Superintendent Vishvesh Joshi and a senior jail official R S Chouhan's was being interrogated, he said.
