MADURAI : For the 100-odd children of police personnel, the entertainment this Sunday was not provided by the `idiot box,' but by a resource person who taught them to expand the horizons of their memory.

Organised here by Officers Club, the `Memory Enhancement' training programme was for school (those above Standard X) and college students.

Soma. Nagalingam, the resource person, had the audience in splits with his lively and amusing session.

Through interesting anecdotes, he said that memory power could be improved significantly through systematic meditation.

Though responses for his poser to the students whether one benefited from limited or unlimited memory were divided, it actually set the tone for the programme.

He brought out instances, both from history and contemporary times, of men with varied memory skills.

Whether it was an army general who could recollect the names of everyone under his command or a philosopher who could identify every citizen of his city or a professor with an ability to calculate thousands of numbers in a series, memory power remained the same, he said.

"It is not very tough. When someone is truly at peace and then makes a wish, it is sure to come true," he says. To reach this stage is tough though, he says, adding that meditation is the key to attain this stage. He asked the students to try mediation, at a time of their choice, for 15 minutes for 21 days. R. Veerasekaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Armed Reserve), gave away prizes to those who participated in the programme.
