HYDERABAD: In an attempt to bring the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) closer to society from the research labs where it has been mostly confined for the last five decades, the 20th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) will begin here on Monday. IJCAI-07, based on the theme `AI and its benefits to society' will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Gachibowli at 6 p.m., in the presence of over 1,100 delegates from 54 countries. Addressing the media here on Sunday, IJCAI-07 conference chair Ramon Lopez de Mantaras and programme chair Manuela M. Veloso said the biannual conference, being held in India for the first time, assumed significance since this was the first year after AI's 50th anniversary celebrations, indicative of the future that would be much more exciting.
Special lectures
There would be seven special lectures, with Prof. Raj Reddy, Carnegie Mellon University, US, delivering the keynote address. IIIT director Rajeev Sangal said the Institute had developed an AI-based pest attack prediction system apart from other breakthroughs in natural language processing, which would be one of the hottest topics of discussion during the conference.
