MADURAI: The first round of the Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) was conducted on Sunday with nearly 2.9 lakh children being administered with oral polio vaccine in Madurai district. Children from 0 to 5 years of age in all urban and rural areas of the district were covered during the immunisation through 1,600 booths set up for the purpose. T. Udhayachandran, District Collector, administered the polio drops to a few children at the Tirupparankundram Primary Health Centre and launched the pulse polio campaign. Nearly, 7000 volunteers from various Government departments and non-governmental organisations were involved in the immunisation work, according to authorities in the Health Department. Transit booths were established at all public places like railway station, bus stand, airport and tourist spots in the district. According to S. Balasubramanian, Deputy Director of Health Services (additional charge), adequate concentration was given to areas where nomadic groups moved and in identified high-risk areas. Of the total booths, 1,300 were in rural areas and the remaining 300 were in urban areas. The high-risk areas were Kombaikadu, Meenakshipuram, Thaniparai, Thideer Nagar, N.M.R.Puram and Karumbalai. Dr. Balasubramanian said that totally three lakh children were to be covered and those children who did not receive the vaccine on Sunday would be covered during the door-to-door verification that begins from Monday. He said all slums were covered intensively by using auto-rickshaws to administer drops to children in every house. In the Madurai Corporation limits, 1.25 lakh children got the polio vaccine at 252 booths. The Mayor, G.Thenmozhi, Deputy Mayor, P.M. Mannan and Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dinakkeren, administered the vaccine to children at the Corporation Health Centre in Pudur. Booths were set up at Mattuthavani Bus Stand and Aaarapalayam bus stand also.
