dated January 9, 1957 : Katju elected leader

In the place of Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla, who died in Delhi last month, Dr. K.N. Katju, at present Union Minister for Defence, was on January 8 unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party of new Madhya Pradesh. The election was held at a meeting of the party when 146 out of a total number of 272 members attended. Mr. B.A. Mandloi, Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Madhya Pradesh, proposed the name of Dr. Katju for the leadership of the party. The proposal was seconded by Mr. Takhatmal Jain and supported by Mr. S.N. Shukla and Dr. S.D. Sharma. Later, the meeting decided that Mr. Mandloi should officiate as leader of the party till Dr. Katju is in a position to take up the Chief Ministership. Dr. Katju could not reach Bhopal due to some unavoidable circumstances.
