This Day That Age
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences will award its biennial Rumford premium to Dr. Subramanyan Chandrasekhar, Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at Yerkes Observatory of Chicago University. The citation for the award, which is for work on the radiative transfer of energy in the interior of stars, said: "To Subramanyan Chandrasekhar for extending to the cosmic realm the stochastic laws which on atomic scale govern phenomena of heat and for his monumental work on radiative equilibrium of stellar atmosphere in which heat is transported as light and light supports matter and matter is ultimately the source of heat itself." The Rumford premium was established in 1796 by Count Rumford as a gift to the Academy to honour the authors of outstanding discoveries in heat of light.
