NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday described as "very unfortunate" the violence in Nandigram, and said it wanted the farmers to be taken into confidence and their interests protected. Even as the heat over Singur barely subsided, violence erupted in Nandigram. Party spokesperson Satyavrat Chaturvedi said the authorities should ensure that law and order was restored. The Congress had already made clear its stand on the four guiding principles for the creation of Special Economic Zones wherever possible, fertile and cultivable lands should not be acquired; adequate compensation should be paid for acquisition; at least one member of the family from whom land is acquired should be given employment; and, if possible, the farmer whose land is acquired should be made a stakeholder in the project. The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the violence there, and the release of its arrested leaders. In a statement, party general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the State Government did not allow a CPI (ML-L) delegation to visit the place earlier this month.
