Salur civic chief threatens to quit

VIZIANAGARAM: Vexed by officials' apathy and non-cooperation of councillors, Salur Municipal Chairperson Mugada Gangamma on Monday threatened to quit. Mrs. Gangamma said that she was being sidelined and kept in the dark on administrative issues on the pretext that she was an illiterate and a Dalit. - Correspondent

Land surrendered

HYDERABAD: A private individual running educational institution near Visakhapatnam on Monday surrendered 5.69 acres of assigned land at Bodametlapalem in Bheemunipatnam mandal for distribution to the poor. The land, market value of which has been estimated at over Rs. 6 crores, belonged to P. Shouriamma (74) but the surrender was made by her husband P. Srivishnu Das. Both are retired headmasters. - Special Correspondent

RBI issues warning

HYDERABAD: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday issued fresh instructions that counterfeit currency should not be dispensed through ATMs or across the exchange counters under any circumstances. The public could verify genuineness of notes from information posted on the RBI website www.rbi.org.in. - Special Correspondent

KARIMNAGAR: TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday criticised the Government for reportedly planning to constitute regional development councils to dilute the cause of separate State issue. Ryot hangs self

KADAPA: A farmer Cheppali Venkataiah (40) hanged himself to death in his agricultural fields at Palagiri in Veerapunayunipalle mandal on Sunday. Venkataiah, who owned 3.50 acres of land, was saddled with debts of Rs. 3 lakhs, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Boy electrocuted

KADAPA: A 14-year-old boy Kumar was electrocuted in Ankireddipalle of Veerapunayunipalle mandal on Sunday. He was cutting neem tree branches when he came in contact with overhead electric wires. - Staff Reporter

MPTCs' demands

HYDERABAD: The CPI has warned that it will extend support to Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) members if they decide to launch an agitation to solve their grievances. In a letter to the Chief Minister, party State secretary K. Narayana asked the Government to concede their demands. Protest rally by TDP

KURNOOL: TDP leader B. Ananthaiah and his supporters took out a rally here on Monday to protest against execution of former Iraq president Saddam Hussain. Mr. Ananthaiah rode a tricycle and addressed a meeting. He said U.S. President George Bush should own up responsibility for every incident in Iraq . Two killed in accident

ANANTAPUR: Two persons belonging to Nellore, who were running a hotel here, were killed when their two-wheeler collided with a tipper coming in the opposite direction near Ravi Venkatampalli village of Tadipatri mandal . Malyadri Naidu (45) died on the spot, Kondaiah (50) succumbed to injuries in the hospital here.-Staff Reporter
