Detailed picture to be available on computer screen Genco establishes LAN covering various thermal stations Genco plumps for `SCADA' software, successfully used by Transco Efforts are on to connect power stations with one another
HYDERABAD: The day is not far-off when engineers in the control room at Genco headquarters Vidyut Soudha will, on pressing a button, know where the fault lies if a power station trips or develops a technical snag. They will instantly know which power station is working and at what capacity or whether it should be backed down due to the heavy cost involved in the operation. In effect, a picture will be available `at a glance' on the computer screen on the running condition and various parameters of power stations of Genco. Plans are afoot to computerise these stations using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), a software designed for power stations, which is successfully used by Transco to connect all its installations to the State load despatch centre at Vidyut Soudha. Transco is using transmission lines of service providers for this purpose. As a prelude to this multi-crore project, Genco has built a local area network (LAN) covering the thermal stations of Vijayawada (1,260 MW), Kothagudem (1,220), Muddanur (420 MW) and Ramagundam (62 MW) and Nagarjunasagar hydel complex (965 MW). A. Rama Rao, Executive Director (Information Systems), Genco, tells The Hindu that a `software enterprise resource management' is being used to build the within campus link under LAN to manage operation and maintenance, store material, human resources, fuel (coal, gas, oil) and accounts. Efforts are on to connect these stations with one another and bring them online.
V-Sat facility
Mr. Rao says work is on to bring Srisailam ( capacity of 1670 MW) under LAN using virtual satellite facility. V-Sat is essential as generation units, switchyard and offices are all scattered and blocked from one another by hills. Lower Sileru (460 MW), Upper Sileru (240 MW) Donkarai (25 MW) and other smaller hydel stations are in line for this facility.
