Electronics industry's plea

NEW DELHI: The electronics industry has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for rationalisation of the duty structure following the rejection of its case by the Union Finance Ministry. The domestic industry claims that a duty structure favouring foreign industry led to imports of 10 crore mobile phones and over 40 lakh computers in 2006. The number will multiply in the coming years if the imbalances are not removed, said the chamber's electronics panel chief, P. K. Sandell, at a news conference here.
