Koraput: The mining capacity of NALCO at Damanjodi in Koraput District has increased to 48 lakh tonnes from its original capacity of 24 lakh tonnes. In alumina refinery, the company had started with eight lakh tonnes capacity in 1986 and now it has joined the top refineries in the world. Speaking at the 27th foundation day celebrations of NALCO mines and refineries at Damanjodi on Sunday executive director of the company Gopal Krushna Behera said aluminium smelting capacity had been raised from 2,30,000 tonnes to 3,45,000 tonnes and power generating capacity to 960 MW. With the commissioning of the first phase expansion project, second phase expansion programme has also been launched. Referring to the message of C.R. Pradhan, NALCO Chairman-cum-Managing Director, he said besides brownfield expansion, NALCO was also exploring the possibilities of setting up joint venture aluminium projects abroad. Radhanath Mahapatra, first chief engineer of the mining and refinery unit of the company and the Green King of NALCO, retired horticulturist of the company were felicitated on the occasion. NALCO also felicitated 10 handicapped persons from the periphery region of Damanjodi with blankets and shawl.Cultural shows were presented by the students on the occasion.
