Weeding out allergies

THE CIVIC body is rather busy these days, working beyond usual office hours. Catching street dogs is the main thing on its agenda and the talk around the city.

The animal welfare non-governmental organisations are equally busy at their protective best.

While potentially dangerous dogs need to be exterminated or at least "externed" from the roads, another danger lurks in this season.

Parthenium weeds and their deadly flowers and pollen. One reason why mid-winter is also the season for sniffles, coughs and skin rashes.

If there are parthenium plants near your house or in the garden or even roadsides, one effective remedy, botanists tell us is the spray them with salted water.

At least for weeks to come the noxious weeds would have disappeared and so will many allergies.

Let us hope when all the dogs to be caught have been caught, our officials turn their attention to curbing the growth this weed.

Disciplining the teacher

IN THE age of hi-tech, it is surprising that not many know much about cellphone etiquette.

Many talk loudly on their mobile phones at large gatherings, press conferences, music concerts and seminars.

At a recent seminar organised to celebrate 100 years of Montessori presence in India, the mobile phones of the participants — all Montessori teachers — kept ringing periodically.

The organisers — Indian Montessori Centre — had to repeatedly urge the participants to switch off their mobile phones.

At the end of the inaugural function, one teacher was overheard saying:

"When they cannot even comply and listen to the organisers, how can they expect their students to listen to them?"
