TAKING THE INITIATIVE: Mayor Mercy Williams plants a sapling at the Convent junction in Kochi on Tuesday. Photo. H. Vibhu
Kochi: A green campaign, marked by the planting of saplings, continues to move forward in Kochi. After being initiated by the first citizen of the country in December last, a few celebrities have come forward to plant saplings in the city. The latest in the series was the planting of saplings by Mayor Mercy Williams at Convent junction where a huge tree was cut down on New Year eve. Though it was earlier decided that the official responsible for the action would be made to plant the saplings and apologise to the Kochiites, the decision was cancelled as the official fell sick.
Public criticism
"The public criticism and sentiment against the cutting of the tree has come as the most deserving punishment to the official responsible for the act," says E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman, Town Planning standing committee of the Corporation. The Mayor planted saplings of Kanikonna, Nelli and Vaka at Convent junction on Tuesday evening. "The responsibility of protecting the saplings will be on the Health officials of the Ernakulam zone. Later, we would find some sponsors for protecting the trees," Mr. Sunilkumar said. Last week saw another green initiative in Aluva. On January 6, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, planted a Mahogany sapling on the campus of St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary in Aluva.
