This Day That Age
Sir Anthony Eden has resigned as the Prime Minister of Britain. He drove to the Buckingham Palace on January 9 to hand over his office to Queen Elizabeth after a dramatically summoned Cabinet meeting. His sudden resignation climaxed weeks of controversy that had raged over his handling of the Suez crisis. An announcement from the Buckingham Palace said: "The Right Honourable Sir Anthony Eden, M.P. (Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury), had an audience with the Queen and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which Her Majesty was pleased to accept." Queen Elizabeth will now ask another statesman to form a Government. The name of Mr. R.A. Butler, the Lord Privy Seal, has been mentioned prominently as a successor to Sir Anthony Eden. No mention of a general election has been made so far. The present Conservative Government has been in office since May 1955, and officially has about three more years to run. Sir Anthony Eden, 59, has been Prime Minister since April 1955, when he succeeded Sir Winston Churchill.
