ERODE: Ministry of Social Justice and Women Empowerment will establish a treatment and rehabilitation centre for physically challenged persons at Muttukadu near Chennai at a cost of Rs 60 crore, said Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Women Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan on Tuesday at Sivagiri village, 40 km from Erode. Ms Jagadeesan was distributing equipment to the physically disabled persons.

She said already land had been granted to the centre and soon the Chief Minister would lay foundation for the building. She said after the Congress-led Union Government came to power, many welfare schemes and rehabilitation programmes were sanctioned to the southern states, especially for Tamil Nadu. Her Ministry had given the physically challenged wheel chairs, callipers, tri-cycles etc, produced in Kanpur. She requested people to make use of such benefits. She also said the DMK Government launched many schemes for the downtrodden in the state.

Ms Jagadeesan thanked Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan for sanctioning a textile park at Komarapalayam and said this would provide sufficient employment. It would also boost economic development in the area.

Mr Elangovan said the physically challenged were not a burden on society and no one should humiliate them. He said in Gobichettipalayam Parliament constituency more than 5,000 persons were benefited by such materials, which were granted to them free. He hoped that from next financial year, more funds would be granted. Modakurichi MLA R.M. Palanisamy presided.
