Heavy rush for VAO applications

Sufficient forms available, says Department of Posts

ERODE: There were long queues before the Erode head post office to get application forms for the post of Village Administrative Officer (VAO).

The Government recently decided to fill the VAO posts in the State and entrusted the sale of applications through post offices. Over five lakh applications have been despatched to all post offices.

In Erode the applications were sold for Rs. 30. There were long queues of men and women at the post offices at Bhavani and Gobichettipalayam. In Erode some youth came to the post office at 5.30 a.m. to get the application though the counter opens at 10 a.m. Velayutham of Chavadipalayampudur said he travelled eight km by bicycle along with his friend to get the form. He said he started around 4 a.m. and reached the Erode Post Office at 5.30 a.m. Another youth from Unjalure area said: "I belong to VAO family and my grandfather was a village munsiff and since I am a graduate I intended to apply for the post."

The postal department officials said: ``We are having sufficient number of applications and so far over 20,000 applications have been sold. If the demand is more, they will send requirement orders and collect the forms from Chennai and supply them."

Two employees have been specially deputed for the sale of the forms at the Erode head post office where the number of women crowd is less.
