Groundwork for State University begins

PUDUCHERRY: The groundwork for establishing a State University in the Union Territory has begun with a consultant appointed by the administration submitting a draft to prepare the Bill. The one-man consultant, a retired administrative officer of Pondicherry University, submitted the report in the second week of December last year. The draft was being studied, Education Minister M. O.H. F Shajahan told The Hindu .

"The Bill has to be approved by the Cabinet before it was placed before the Assembly," he said. The Government's intention to establish a State University was one of the promises made by the Chief Minister in the budget speech. Subsequently, the consultant was appointed in September last and was asked to submit the report within three months.

The Minister said the administration had already identified the land in Bahour for the proposed university.

"We have identified 60 acres of land and we are in the process of acquiring it," he said. It is learnt that the draft, in three chapters, has strongly justified the plan to establish the university, as the number of professional and arts and science colleges have increased in the last six to seven years.

There are 64 colleges in the Union Territory and all of them have been attached to the Pondicherry University.

Academics here are of the opinion that apart from the colleges here, a few others had also been affiliated to the Central University, and it was "highly congested".

"A university under the control of the Puducherry Government will help us in starting new employment oriented courses, especially catering to the industries here," the Minister noted.
