ASSEMBLING FOR A CAUSE: Communist Party of India volunteers stage a demonstration before the Puducherry Slum Clearance Board on Tuesday to seek housing subsidy for poor families.

Puducherry: Volunteers of the Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a demonstration before the Slum Clearance Board here on Tuesday. They urged the authorities to sanction without any further delay Rs. 1 lakh as subsidy to each of the poor families to enable them to convert their huts into concrete structures, as promised by the Government.

Mr. Sedhu Selvam, secretary, Oulgaret block of the CPI, led the agitation. Those who addressed the agitators included secretary of the party here N. Kalainathan, member of the national council of the CPI and legislator R. Viswanathan and a host of functionaries of the party. They said that there were frequent promises that the subsidy would be disbursed to the poor families for housing facility.

But nothing had been done so far.
