MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Aided Schools Non-Teaching Staff Association has urged the Government to take steps to fill up vacant non-teaching posts in schools and direct the School Education Department to commence the process in this regard. At its executive committee meeting held here last week, a resolution was passed seeking immediate intervention of the Government by highlighting that the administrative work in many aided schools at high school/higher secondary level was badly affected because of vacancies. According to S. Durairaj, State president, the workload of non-teaching staff had increased manifold in many schools after the high schools were upgraded as higher secondary schools. "Teachers are appointed as per student strength. But when it comes to non-teaching posts, no action is taken to carry out office work connected with higher secondary classes," he said in a statement. He said there were more than two vacancies in most of the schools and in a particular school with more than 1,000 students there was only a watchman in the non-teaching staff category. Mr. Durairaj said there were at least 1,000 schools in the State with vacancy-related problems. The association representatives sought an appointment with the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to seek his help in the issue. In another resolution, the association thanked the Government for announcing Pongal bonus to its employees and teachers.
