Olmert visits China

Pallavi Aiyar

Beijing: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert began a three-day visit to China on Tuesday. The visit is aimed at boosting trade and military ties. Mr Olmert is also likely to lobby China to close ranks with the U.S. and some European countries in taking action against Iran's nuclear programme. Mr. Olmert will meet Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao. Israel is hoping to push up its bilateral trade with China from $3 billion to $8 billion by 2008. China is Israel's third largest trading partner. The trip marks the 15-year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides.
