Centre soft on terrorists: Swamy

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The killings of 62 people in Assam showed the failure of the Central Government in formulating an effective counter-terrorist strategy, the Janata Party has said.

Its president Subramanian Swamy told journalists on Tuesday that the killings were a result of the Centre's "soft or pro-terrorist approach." The Prime Minister had no compunction in meeting a delegation of Sri Lankan MPs belonging to the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance.

On the Mullaperiyar dam issue, Dr. Swamy said Tamil Nadu should raise the water level to 142 ft as directed by the Supreme Court. This should be done before January 14.

Supporting a second term for President Abdul Kalam, Dr. Swamy said Mr. Kalam had several admirable features, and had been a source of inspiration to children.

Dr. Swamy said his book on Sri Lanka would be released in New Delhi on January 16. As part of the launch, a panel discussion had been organised. N. Ram, editor-in-chief of The Hindu , G. Parthasarathy, former diplomat, and S.C. Chandrahasan, human rights activist, would participate in the discussion which would be moderated by N.N. Jha, former High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
