GUNTUR: About 2,000 candidates from Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna and Nalgonda districts tried their luck at the job fair being organised by Guntur Municipal Corporation on Hindu College premises and 800 of them got placement. The initiative was the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh by any local body. GMC Commissioner D. Rama Rao invited seven companies to find placement for some youth trained by it under Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojna (SJSRY) and Andhra Pradesh Urban Services for Poor (APUSP), but looking at the scope of skilled manpower and raw talent six more companies joined.
Extended
Originally scheduled to close on Tuesday, the fair has been extended by a day with a number of companies showing interest and aspirants coming in hordes from all districts around and even from distant places like Nellore and Visakhapatnam. Subhiksha, a consumer retail chain recruited computer sales assistants and stores assistant for its chain all over the State. Vijayalakshmi Bajaj, Hero Honda, Tata Indicom, ICICI Prudential, HSBC Bank recruited personnel for marketing their products and technicians. The 108 emergency service, run by EMRI, recruited medical technicians, van drivers, communication officers and despatch officers with good communication skills.
On the lookout
The A.P. Cotton Association is looking for skilled and semi-skilled staff in their spinning mills coming up in a big way in Guntur district and will continue its drive for two more days. Bommidala Filaments, Bajaj Infotech, Tata Sky, Sri Ram Chits and Reliance were some of the other companies which recruited personnel.
