Madurai in semifinals

Sattur: A disputed goal by John Arulraj three minutes from close helped Madurai defeat Tuticorin 1-0 and enter the semifinals of the 48th State senior inter-district football championship at the SHN Edward HSS ground, Sattur, on Tuesday.

In a well-contested match, Madurai dominated in the first half, but missed several chances, including a sitter by midfielder Velmurugan. But in the second, Tuticorin played better and had an edge over the opponent but could not score. Three minutes from close, Madurai earned a freekick on the right flank.

Velmurugan took the 30-yard freekick. Striker John Arulraj received the ball nicely near the edge of the box and scored off a right footer. Referee Jeyakumar signalled goal, but Tuticorin players protested vehemently for off side. The referee stood on his verdict but the Tuticorin players walked off the field and refused to continue the game. Later the technical committee awarded the match to Madurai.
