`Implement silk board Act'

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Mysore Powerloom Silk Manufacturers Cooperative Society has demanded that the Central Silk Board Act be implemented immediately and the Silk Exchange made the only optional for weavers to purchase the yarn.

Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh Governments were encouraging silk weavers by providing free power, but the Karnataka Government was being indifferent, it said.

Members of the society complained of "harassment" by the Enforcement Cell, and cited it as one of the reasons poor production in the country. To highlight the problems faced by those in the silk industry, the silk manufacturers cooperative society has organised a protest meeting at Banappa Park in Bangalore on January 10.
