KURNOOL: A farmer created a flutter at a private bank here on Tuesday anguished by the refusal of the bank staff to operate his account. Rythu Sagham activists led by Siva Nagi Reddy lodged a protest with the officials of Indus Ind Bank branch for "harassing" the farmer T. Hanumanthu. The transactions in the branch were stalled for more than an hour because of the incident. According to reports, Mr. Hanumanthu borrowed a loan to buy a tractor from Mahindra Finance Ltd, which issued a cheque for Rs. 1,60,000. The cheque was deposited with the Indus Ind Bank branch five days ago and the amount was credited into his account on Saturday.
Kept waiting
However, the branch refused to release the amount on the ground that he could operate the account only with a cheque. He was asked to wait till the cheque book was supplied to him after a week. The bank officials reportedly refused to transfer the amount to another account holder to whom the farmer owed money for buying a tractor. Anguished by the refusal of the bank staff to honour his direction, the farmer approached presspersons and Rythu Sangham leaders. The leaders picked up an argument with the bank authorities. The leaders insisted that amount should be transferred to any account indicated by the depositor without cheque also. Later, the bank officials tendered an apology for the inconvenience to the farmer and transferred the amount to another account as sought by him.
