NEW DELHI: Capturing man in his myriad moods is an ongoing weeklong solo exhibition titled "Self on Anvil" in Shridharani Gallery at Triveni Kala Sangam here.

Delhi-based artist Sanjay Roy has in his latest exhibition portrayed man in his performing mode; acting, dancing, speaking or just play-acting. Sanjay's first solo exhibition, "Self and the World", was held at Triveni Art Gallery in 1993. Another of his solo shows, "Freeze Frame", was held at Shridharani Gallery in 2001.

"His current show portrays the extremely self-conscious age we live in. The voice and movement that the artist creates are vis-à-vis the consciousness of freedom, about knowing what you are doing. His painted bodies are designed to simply highlight the development of freedom to make choices as a person and as character," says art critic Keshav Malik.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Sanjay's interest in painting was evident at a very early age. His parents were stage artistes and his forefathers used to work for the Viceroys. He studied art under the guidance of Rameshwar Broota with a national scholarship from the Union Ministry of Culture.

Since 1994, Sanjay has been guiding senior art students in the art department at Triveni Kala Sangam. He has participated in various national and international shows since 1987.

Fellowship

Besides receiving a senior fellowship from the Government in 2006, Sanjay also received a junior fellowship from the Government in 1998-1999. He also received a National Scholarship of the Government for 1992-1994 and the Bansi Parimur Award in 1995.

The exhibition will be on up to this Friday.
