Dog eats infant's arm in Bijapur

BIJAPUR: Close on the heels of dogs eating up an infant on the premises of municipality last month, an arm of a baby was devoured by a canine here on Tuesday. Some passers-by noticed a dog eating up a newborn abandoned alongside Station Road near the railway underpass. Even before police reached the spot, the stray dog had eaten up one of its arms. It was not clear if the baby was alive or not when it was attacked by the animal. The Gol Gumbaz police are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

Meeting discusses railway projects

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with officials of Infrastructure, Finance and Railways and discussed the pending railway projects in the State. Work on several railway projects in the State had been delayed due to inadequate release of funds by the Railways. The meeting reviewed the progress of projects such as Hassan-Bangalore and Arsikere-Hassan-Mangalore lines. — Special Correspondent

`Revive POTA'

BANGALORE: Chikmagalur MLA and senior BJP leader C.T. Ravi has said that "terrorists" had spread their network in the State and it was time the Centre revived the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the BJP activists had referred to the presence of the recently arrested terrorist, Imran, nearly two years ago and this was dismissed by the local police as a frivolous complaint with a communal tinge. — Staff Reporter

`Field more youth'

BANGALORE: The executive committee meeting of the Yuva Janata Dal (Secular) on Tuesday decided to request the party leaders to field youth from 50 per cent of the constituencies during the ensuing elections to urban local bodies. The Yuva Janata Dal (Secular) State president Gururaj Hunasimarad told presspersons here that the meeting adopted a resolution congratulating Chief Minister H.D. `Provide plantains in place of eggs'

HASSAN: Members of the Sri Kalala Devi Jain Mahila Samaj took out procession in Hassan on Tuesday seeking withdrawal of supply of boiled egg to schoolchildren under the mid-day meal scheme. They said that instead of eggs, children could be given plantains. Samaj members took out a procession from Mahaveer Bhavan to the Deputy Commissioner's office and presented a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathnarayana Gowda. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar were present.

Woman commits suicide

HASSAN: A 35-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping into Hemavathi Nala, along with her two children, in Arkalgud Taluk in Hassan district on Tuesday morning. Seeing her jumping, agriculture workers from nearby fields jumped into the nala and saved one child. The body of the woman, Rekha, was found in the afternoon. She had reportedly taken the step unable to bear torture by her in-laws and husband. Rekha from Chikkanahalli village was married to Shiva Swamy from Gende Halli village near Halebeedu in Belur taluk five years ago. Superintendent of Police Panduranga Rane said investigation was on.

Man suffers burns

DAVANGERE: A 26-year-old man was allegedly set on fire by his family members at K.T.J. Nagar area on Monday. The victim Nagaraj, who suffered 70 per cent burns, has been admitted to the Chigateri General Hospital. He had reportedly come home late in the night and to punish him, his parents and sister locked him up in a room, poured kerosene and set him afire. The police have arrested his parents and sister. A case has been registered at the KTJ Nagar police. — Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: A total of 1,87,222 children (as against the targeted 2,09,192) below the age of five were covered under the Pulse Polio programme on the first day (Sunday) and the target achieved was 89.49 per cent, District Health Officer B.S. Nagaraja Rao said here on Tuesday. Following are the taluk-wise details: Alur taluk recorded 93% (9,785 children), Arkalgud 84.97 % (22,645), Arsikere 92.08% (34,277), Belur 89.44 % (20,146), Chennarayapatna 93.97 % (26,990), Hassan 91.38% (41,495), Holenarsipur 90.88% (19,734) and Sakleshpur taluk recorded 73.87 % (12,150 children). — Staff Correspondent

Foundation stone

SIRSI: Vivekananda Vaidya, MLA, has laid the foundation stone for the proposed Shri Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose commercial complex worth Rs. 90 lakh in the heart of the town here on Monday.

After receiving a felicitation he said that he has given Rs. 25 lakh for the development of the town. Standing committe president Keshav Shetty, Muncipal Commmissioner G. Ramdas and others were present on the occasion.

Bandh peaceful

KARWAR: The Bandh call given by Muslim organisations including Tanzeem evoked mixed response at Bhatkal here on Tuesday. The call was given to protest against the detention of Inayitulla Shabandri, a resident of Hindu Colony in Bhatkal, under the Gooda Act. The bandh passed off peacefully as no untoward incident was reported. All the shops belonging to the Muslim community were closed in the town. The educational institutions run by Anjuman Education Society were closed.

J.D. Naik, former MLA, and Rama Moger, Bhatkal Block Congress president, attended the meeting. The police had made elaborate security arrangements.

KARWAR: District and Sessions Judge, K. Somashekar, said here on Tuesday that the High Court Chief Justice, Cyriac Joseph, would lay the foundation stone for a court complex in the premises of the district court on January 13.
