BANGALORE: Members of the Rashtriya Kisan Sangha, Karnataka, have urged the State Government to waive loans of all farmers without categorising them as rich and poor. Sangha general secretary Konche Shivarudrappa said the Government should waive at least Rs. 1 lakh per farmer irrespective of their status. He pointed out that because of these loans and other financial problems, most small and marginal farmers were committing suicide. A decision on waiving the loans should be taken immediately, he said. Demanding that the Government should not install meters to irrigation pump sets, Mr. Shivarudrappa said that all drought-hit districts should be covered under the drought-relief scheme. "As of now, the drought relief fund, which had been released, was meagre and was confined only to six districts," he said. To protest against the alleged arrogant behaviour of Pavagada Tahsildar A. Ramakrishna with farmers when they went with a memorandum to him recently, the sangha members would lay siege to the tahsildar's office on January 22, he added.
