CHENNAI: G.J.Prasad has taken over as Chief General Manager, Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), Southern Region.

CPI(M) to stage Statewide protests

CHENNAI: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday asked its ranks to stage protest demonstrations all over the State to condemn the murder of nine partymen at Nandigram in West Bengal on January 6.

Through a statement here, State CPI (M) secretary N.Varadarajan also appealed to all the democratic forces to raise their voice against the atrocities committed by Trinamool Congress activists.

In Chennai, the demonstration would be led by him on January 10, he said. — Special Correspondent

Free LPG scheme from January 14

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi will inaugurate the distribution of free LPG connection with stove to the poor families in the State here on Sunday (January 14).

On the same day, Central and State Ministers will hand over the free gas connections to the beneficiaries in districts. On June 16, at six selected points in the city, Union Ministers T.R.Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran and State Ministers K.Anbazhagan, Arcot N.Veeraswami, M.K.Stalin and Parithi Ilamvazhudhi will distribute the connection and the stove to the beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, Principal Commissioner and Commissioner of Civil Supplies Department, Chairman and Managing Director Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation inspected the quality of stoves to be distributed to the beneficiaries in Chennai.

On the inaugural day, gas connection will be given to about 34,500 beneficiaries. — Special Correspondent

Elected chairman of Gandhi Museum

CHENNAI: N. Mahalingam, industrialist, has been elected chairman of Gandhi Museum, Madurai. This follows the resignation of former President R. Venkataraman from the post. K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi, former officer of the Indian Administrative Service, and Mariappan were elected secretary and vice-chairman, according to a release. — Special Correspondent

Book selection

committee set up

CHENNAI: The Government on Tuesday announced the constitution of the 19-member book selection committee. Headed by the Director of Public Libraries, the panel includes officials, academicians and poets. Apart from the Directors of Tamil Development and Connemara Library, Ilayabharathi, Salma, and A.R. Venkatachalapathy were among the other members, according to an official release.

This follows appeals from different sections including the Booksellers and Publishers' Association for the constitution of the committee.

In another release, the Government said it constituted a 12-member Chennai district library authority. — Special Correspondent

Imprisonment for rape

SIVAKASI: A sub-court here on Tuesday sentenced a student of industrial training institute to undergo eight years of rigorous imprisonment for outraging the modesty a girl. The accused had forcibly taken the 14-year-old girl while she was grazing the cattle at Anaikaraipatti near Sattur in August 2005. When the case came up for hearing, the Sub-Judge, A. Zakeer Hussain, imposed a fine of Rs. 1,500 on the accused.

Jail term for youth

SIVAKASI: A sub-court on Monday awarded a five-year sentence to a youth of Tiruthangal, for attempting to molest a two-year-old girl in March 2005. The court imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000.

Prisoner escapes from jail

SRIVILLIPUTTUR: A remand prisoner, K. Muneeswaran, escaped from the sub-jail here on Tuesday.

The prisoner took to his heels when he was involved in fetching water from a municipal tanker on the jail premises in the afternoon.

He was lodged in the jail since December 15, 2006, in connection with a theft case in Rajapalayam.

Dies in road accident

RAMANATHAPURAM: A 55-year-old woman was killed in a road accident at Santhanamariamman temple near Parthibanur on Tuesday. When Udaiyal, wife of Alagar of Ponnakarai, was walking on roadside, a lorry, which was taking reverse, ran over her. The Parthibanur police registered a case.

Infant found abandoned

VIRUDHUNAGAR: A one-week-old male infant was found abandoned near a textile shop near the Mariamman Temple here on Tuesday.

The police said the baby, wrapped in a cloth, was found under the staircase of the shop. The baby is under the care of Government hospital here.

IMFL outlets to remain closed

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Government has issued order to close all outlets run by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation and other Indian Made Foreign Liquor shops on January 16 in view of Thiruvalluvar Day.

The Collector, K. S. Muthuswaamy, said officials concerned were directed to take severe action against those violating the order.

Water level

MADURAI: The water level in the Periyar dam on Tuesday stood at 122.60 feet with an inflow of 86 cusecs and a discharge of 1,225 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 46.26 feet with an inflow of 810 cusecs and a discharge of 1,891 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 4,336 mcft.

Demand for separate train

ERODE: Over 100 railway season ticket holders and members of the passengers association staged a demonstration before the Erode railway station demanding a separate train from Erode to Coimbatore at 7.30 a.m. They said that over 2,000 people travel from Erode to Coimbatore and nearly 90 per cent of them are employees in Tirupur.

Following the change in the timings of the Chennai-Mangalore Express and also cancellation of the Tiruchi-Mangalore Express, commuters to these places find difficult to reach Tirupur in time.

Demonstration on use of LPG stoves

ERODE: On behalf of Hindustan Petroleum, a demonstration on use of LPG stoves and handling of cylinders were held at Rajajipuram in Erode, on Tuesday.

The State Government has announced free LPG connections to the people below the poverty line.

District Supply Officer Amirthajothy and others participated. Similar demonstrations were also conducted at all taluk headquarters on Tuesday. The distribution of free gas connection on January 14. - Staff Reporter

Officials rescue two child labourers

TUTICORIN: Officials of the Department of Labour rescued two child labourers from a hospital and a candy manufacturing unit at Kovilpatti on Tuesday. According to the Project Officer, NCLP, M. Nallaperumal, while M. Marimuthu (13), an VIII Standard dropout from Ooththupatti near Kovilpatti, was rescued from a hospital, M. Karkkuvel (13) of Kovilpatti was liberated from a candy manufacturing unit when labour inspectors, Kannan and Thiruvalluvan, and representatives of NGOs conducted surprise checks in these establishments.

Mysterious fever claims seven lives

Nagercoil: Residents of Kurumpanai, a coastal village near Colachel in Kanyakumari district, are under the grip of panic following the outbreak of a mysterious fever, which claimed the lives of seven persons.According to sources, seven persons, Sahaya Queen Marry (22), Siluvai Pillai (60), Vincent (60), Bebinal (36), Gaberial (52), a eleven-month-old baby and Glaramma (60) of Kurumpanai, died after they were affected by a mysterious fever. When contacted the Health Department officials also confirmed seven deaths in a span of 10 days.

Chief Minister to flag off new train

Thanjavur: The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, will flag off the first broad gauge train from Tiruvarur to Thanjavur at Tiruvarur on January 12. The Chief Minister will arrive Thanjavur by Rockfort Express in the morning. All necessary arrangements are being made, official sources said on Tuesday.

Mass contact programme

NAGAPATTINAM: A mass contact programme will be conducted at Thirukkuvalai in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday. The Collector, Tenkasi S. Jawahar, will preside over the meeting and receive petitions.

The programme will begin at 8 a.m. at Anjuham Muthuvelar Government Higher Secondary School. An exhibition has also been organised on the achievements and welfare programmes of the Government.

Four held for double murder

THANJAVUR: The police have arrested four persons involved in the double murder of a couple six months back. The arrested persons belong to Gorikulam, Thanjavur.

Police found the body of Sakunthala (72) in a canal at Kasanadu Thekkur on June 18, 2006. Her throat was slit. On June 19, 2006, the body of Venkatesan (75), husband of Sakunthala, was found in a canal with his throat slit.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 95.80 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 582 cusecs and the discharge, 8,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter
