TTD chief pleads for cut in VIP visits

Staff Reporter

  • TTD finds it difficult to provide facilities to all pilgrims
  • Four couples tie the knot on the occasion

ELURU: B. Karunakar Reddy, Chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams (TTD) on Tuesday made an appeal to VVIPs to refrain from making frequent visit to the Tirumala shrine which was causing a great discomfort to pilgrims in having a darshan of the god.

He said the amenities available at the shrine were not in match with the pilgrim rush. Accommodation could be provided to about 40,000 pilgrims per day on the Tirumala Hills. But the daily rush was crossing 3-4 lakh, making it quite difficult for the TTD to provide them basic facilities.

    Mass marriages

Mr. Karunakar Reddy said that the TTD had decided to perform not less than 50,000 mass marriages at Tirumala on February 21. The TTD would present `mangala sutram' to brides. The concept was intended to strengthen the Hindu marriage system, the Hindu `dharma' and dissuade people from lavish expenditure for marriages, he said. Meanwhile, four couples entered the wedlock in the presence of TTD chief. Mr. Reddy performed `nischitartham' for another three couples for their marriage at Tirumala on February 21.
