Minister talks to civil supplies officials

HYDERABAD: Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy said here on Tuesday that onions would be sold at Rs. 7 a kg in all Rythu Bazars across the State.

At a meeting with officials of the Civil Supplies Department to review rising onion prices, the Minister directed Markfed to procure onions and supply them to Rythu Bazars at Rs. 7 a kg.

The Government would bear subsidy of Rs. 5 on each kg, he added.

The Minister said that prices of chillies and tamarind would come down in the next few days as heavy arrivals were expected.

Rythu Bazars were already selling palmolein, tamarind and pulses at reduced rates.

He clarified that the sale of these commodities would continue at the Rythu Bazars.

Instructions were also issued to the Girijan Cooperative Corporation to purchase 30,000 tonnes of tamarind. He said Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy would be requested to write a letter to the Centre to increase the sugar quota in view of the increase in number of ration cards.

Mangoes for Japan

The Minister said that Japan has agreed to purchase Banginapalli variety of mangoes after a gap of two decades.

However, Japan has put a condition that the mangoes should be processed in vapour heat treatment plants.

The Government has decided to set up two such plants in Tirupati and Nuzvid (Krishna district).

He said that Andhra Pradesh Export Development Agency (APEDA) has come forward to provide financial assistance for setting up the two plants.

Once the fruits were processed, close to 5,000 metric tonnes of mangoes could be exported.
