IN MOURNING: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu at a condolence meeting for Saddam Hussein in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu has drawn a contrast between United States President George W. Bush and his predecessor Bill Clinton, terming the former a warmonger and the latter a peace-lover. Addressing a party meeting organised to condemn the "brutal hanging" of Saddam Hussein in the old city on Wednesday, Mr. Naidu claimed that he had invited Mr. Clinton to the State keeping in view the development of information technology. In contrast, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy invited Mr. Bush "who is not committed to world peace and secularism" to the city. The former Chief Minister described the hanging of Saddam Hussein, a couple of days before the dawn of New Year and also Bakrid, as a "blatant violation of human rights". Hussein was unfazed even seconds before he was hanged. The Iraq Government, which was acting at the behest of the US, refused to fulfil even the last wish of Hussein that he should be shot dead like a war hero, Mr. Naidu said.
Non-aligned policy
Mr. Naidu criticised the "feeble remarks" of the UPA-led Government over the hanging and described it as a "total departure" of the country's perceived non-aligned policy. Striking a sentimental chord, Mr. Naidu recalled the role played by the TDP during communal riots in Gujarat. He said the TDP expressed solidarity with the Muslim community whose feelings were hurt by the hanging of Hussein. TDP leaders Lal Jan Basha, Syed Yousuf Ali, Ibrahim-bin-Abdullah Masquati, G. Sayanna and Talasani Srinivas Yadav also participated in the meeting.
